Doug Yokoyama

Alto saxophonist Doug Yokoyama has been performing and composing jazz and creative music for the past two decades. Since moving to San Francisco in the late 1980's he has focused on trying to understand and assimilate his role in an ever widening cross cultural environment. He has been strongly influenced by a number of musical traditions from African American and Asian American jazz to Middle Eastern cultures and music.

Doug has had the pleasure of performing or recording with a number of diverse artists including Francis Wong, Tatsu Aoki, Jeff Chan, Jimmy Biala, Jen Shyu, John Carlos Perea, Elliot Humberto Kavee, Trevor Dunn and others. He has appeared in Asian American jazz festivals in San Francisco and Chicago as both a leader and group member.

Music for Doug is an affirmation and reflection of his every day life. It is the openness of hope and freedom of expression that drives his compositions, allowing participants to create their own vision within the group's harmonious nature. Sometimes more structured is offered and sometimes less; yet, throughout the creative process there is always a meeting of the hearts and minds. This is hopefully what makes the music honest.
